Admissions Requirements

Individuals who are seeking admission to The Art Institute of Vancouver are required to complete or submit the following:

  1. Admissions Interview (in person or over the phone) with an Assistant Director of Admissions. The purpose of the interview is to:
    • Explore the prospective student's background and interests as they relate to the programs offered at The Art Institute of Vancouver;
    • Assist prospective students to identify the appropriate area of study consistent with their previous education, background, and stated or demonstrated interest in our program offerings;
    • Provide information concerning curriculum offerings and support services available at The Art Institute of Vancouver.
  2. The student has successfully completed high school (Grade 12 or GED 12) or; a mature student of not less than 20 years of age as of the start date of the program and has accurately represented their education, age and other required information to determine they meet the admission criteria to The Art Institute of Vancouver programs.
  3. A separate Application Form and Enrollment Agreement must be completed and signed by the applicant, as well as parent or guardian (if applicant is a minor).
  4. Essay. A written paragraph of approximately 250 words describing what the prospective student's career goals are and how The Art Institute of Vancouver can help the student achieve those goals.
  5. The cost to apply is $150 ($50 Application Fee & $100 Assessment Fee). 
  6. Applicants for the culinary programs must also provide proof of medical insurance valid for use in British Columbia for the duration of their program of study as well as submit a negative test result for Tuberculosis and a doctor’s note certifying that the applicant is in good health.
  7. Test scores. All students whose “first” language is not English are required to submit proof of their English competency corresponding to a minimum score of 480 on the paper-based TOEFL exam or 157 on the computer-based TOEFL exam.
  8. Degree seeking applicants are required to have met the English proficiency requirement with a minimum grade of "C" in English 12 (or equivalent) and to have met the Math proficiency requirement with a minimum grade of "C" in Math 11 (or equivalent). Applicants can also meet any of the following English language or Math requirements:

    • "C" in English Literature 12, English 12 First Peoples, Communications 12 or Technical and Professional Communications 12 (each option must include the completion of the provincial exam), or
    • Computer-based TOEFL 213 with Essay 4.5, or
    • Paper-based TOEFL 550 with TWE 4.5, or
    • Internet-based TOEFL 80, or
    • LPI Essay score 26 level 4, or
    • IELTS (Academic module only) - min. overall band test score 6.5
    • Advanced Placement (AP) English Language or Literature - min. grade of 3 or "C"
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) English Language A (Higher level) - min. grade of 6 or "C"
    • Proof of undergraduate (bachelor) degree conferral from an English-speaking postsecondary institution.
    • Accuplacer Sentence Skills score of above 87 and Accuplacer Reading Comprehension score of above 78.
    • Accuplacer Arithmetic score of 65 and above and Accuplacer Algebra score of 82 and above.
    • Applicants who do not meet the above requirements may be required to take a transitional English and/or transitional Math course.

Each applicant's academic transcript and completed essay will be evaluated by the Admissions Acceptance Committee. The committee determines the compatibility of the applicant with the programs at The Art Institute of Vancouver and ultimately makes the final decision regarding acceptance into programs offered at The Art Institute of Vancouver.

Applicants who have not yet submitted all transcripts and/or other required documentation may be allowed to begin class conditionally, but must provide all required transcripts or documentation by a date established by the Director of Admissions, not to exceed one quarter.

The Art Institute of Vancouver reserves the right to request any additional information necessary to evaluate an applicant's potential for academic success.

Although a visit to The Art Institute of Vancouver is not a requirement for submitting an application form and enrollment agreement for acceptance, prospective students are encouraged to schedule an interview with one of our admissions representatives to discuss special needs, long-term or short-term goals, and lifelong career aspirations.
