Shaw Communications announced today a new community initiative, Shaw Cares, to help the less fortunate this Thanksgiving.
On Saturday October 7th from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Shaw will host a Thanksgiving luncheon in the Downtown Eastside for those who may not have the means to enjoy a hot meal. The luncheon will be prepared by The Art Institute of Vancouver - Dubrulle Culinary Arts. The meals will be served by Shaw employees and their families in Crab Park. Over 1,000 guests will enjoy a hot turkey lunch, and will also be provided with care packages to help them prepare for the upcoming winter season.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, Shaw will also deliver food hampers to Lower Mainland families in need. The food and grocery gift cards have been donated by Shaw employees as part of a September fundraising campaign.
Terry Medd, Vice-President of Operations with Shaw Cablesystems, says “Our employees participate in fund-raising campaigns throughout the year, and they always have great ideas about how we as a company can make a difference in our community. Shaw Cares is one of those wonderful ideas that really took seed, and fit so well with our company’s focus of Thanksgiving as a time of sharing and being thankful for all of the great things in our lives.”
When Shaw approached Chef Don Guthro, Academic Director at The Art Institute of Vancouver - Dubrulle Culinary Arts, he immediately committed his students to the project. “This is what it’s all about,” says Chef Guthro. “You can cook on the line, create a masterpiece for the dining room, but to have the chance to provide a hot and healthy meal where it is most needed? That’s an amazing opportunity for our students, with the built-in challenge of preparing and transporting 1,000 meals. We’re proud to be part of this Thanksgiving event.”
