Media Arts – Programs & Curriculum



  • Digital Arts — Associate of Specialized Technology
    • The Digital Arts Program prepares the student for entry-level positions in the interactive multimedia design and production. The curriculum stresses the development of digital design skills for CD-ROM, DVD, digital video editing, Web production, imaging, and print.

      Students develop their skills using relevant technology including applications from Adobe, and Avid. Students learn to use creativity, conceptual thinking, and technical expertise to develop marketable design solutions.

      Graduates have secured entry-level employment with television stations, design studios, Web site development companies, and interactive multimedia operations.

      Since employers today put great emphasis on communication literacy, students take courses to develop skills in writing and public speaking. These skills are then used in all other courses. Students are introduced to psychology, professional development, history, and marketing to round out their education.

  • First  Quarter
    • DA110 Concept Development 

      This course focuses on the design process and methods for project management, creative thinking and user-centered solutions. Throughout the course, the concept of design as an interactive process will be stressed.

      Prerequisites: None

    • DA120 Digital Design 

      Students will apply design elements and principles to compositions and layouts to create effective graphic design. This course includes a basic introduction to classic design theory and the use of production tools to produce graphic elements with the technical precision of a professional designer.

    • DA130 Introduction to Computing 

      This course provides an introduction to the Macintosh laptop environment, including professional computer usage, file management and protocol, and an overview of the internet as a research tool.

    • PA160 Communications I 

      Students are introduced to a wide spectrum of communication tools that include creative and expository writing, research, and peer evaluations. Class work will use these tools to facilitate such areas as time management, goal setting, critical thinking, and self esteem.

  • Second  Quarter
    • DA210 Digital Documents 

      Students will learn to design, write, and publish digital documents for online publication. Additional emphasis will be placed on enhancing writing skills used in commercial applications.

    • DA220 Typography 

      In this course, students learn the use of the letterform as an artistic and communication element, as well as technical specifications of type for production and graphic design.

      Prerequisites: None

    • DA230 Designing with Illustrator 

      The course provides students with fundamental knowledge of color theory, file optimization, and professional quality graphics for the Web. Scaled Vector Graphics (SVGs) are introduced.

    • PA260 Public Speaking 

      An introduction to the various strategies for overcoming communication apprehension and gaining confidence for effective public speaking is covered in this course. The skills learned are applied in other courses for client presentations and demonstrations.

    • DA310 Introduction to Video 

      This course focuses on the development of standard video and production. An overview of the artistic and technical concepts of video production and the interrelationship between graphic stills, moving video, and sound are offered. A strong emphasis is placed on original script writing as well as detailed representations and concepts produced in the form of storyboards.

    • DA320 Designing with Photoshop 

      A thorough understanding of this industry standard application is critical for the successful designer. This course provides students with knowledge using Photoshop® to create exceptional imagery for multimedia products. Image optimization and GIF animation are studied.

    • DA330 Digital Layout 

      This course concentrates on professional layout and design standards using Adobe In Design®. Integration with other graphic applications–Adobe Photoshop®, Illustrator®, Acrobat® are covered in depth.

      Prerequisites: DA220, DA230

    • PA360 History of Visual Communication 

      Students study the historical influences and design movements from the late 19th century to the present. This course includes an overview of film history through the examination of cinematic achievement.

  • Fourth  Quarter
    • DA410 Introduction to User Interface Design 

      Students focus on design and production for web based publications. Emphasis is given to the integration of text and images and the development of nonlinear conceptualization. Introduction to web based programming and production of complex to be used in electronic publications.

      Prerequisites: DA130

    • DA420 Flash 

      This course teaches students the mechanics and fundamental design techniques for Flash. Graphics, text, symbols, creation of animation, and basic interactivity are studied.

    • DA430 Introduction to Motion Graphics 

      The aim of this course is on typographic design and its application as a primary animation and secondary video supplement. Emphasis is placed on developing typographic principles and how they can be developed, characterized, and applied to multimedia publications. Animated type and its unique ability to interact with multi-layered video productions are explored in depth.

    • PA460 Marketing 

      Marketing is designed as an overview and introductory course to the marketing field and for all Art Institute majors to work in diverse teams. As a class, we will explore the meaning of marketing in a free market economy, environmental influences, and tracking trends for decision making. We will learn marketing fundamentals, market research, consumer behavior, market segmentation, and marketing mix decision variables (produce, price, placement, promotion). We will broaden your thoughts on marketing to appreciate the significant role it will play in your professional lives, and with good practice, to be able to prepare a marketing plan.

  • Fifth  Quarter
    • DA510 Advanced Applied Design 

      This studio course emphasizes advanced design principles and the creation of interactive digital multimedia products utilizing Illustrator® and Photoshop®. Focus is placed on usability design.

      Prerequisites: DA230, DA320

    • DA520 Intermediate Video 

      The student continues to develop video production skills using nonlinear editing systems. Through in-depth instruction, the course focuses on commercial writing and production, production personnel, audio and lighting techniques, and shot composition. Continued emphasis on editing and project storyboarding. Advanced avenues of video design will be explored.

    • DA530 Intermediate Interactive Design 

      The student learns to create rich content integrating interactive audio, video, bitmaps, vectors, text, and fonts. Projects are deployed on CD/DVD and online.

      Prerequisites: DA430

    • PA560 Psychology 

      This survey course covers the principles of traditional psychology that include perception, motivation, intelligence, memory, abnormal psychology, and personality.

  • Sixth  Quarter
    • DA610 Advanced Interactive Design 

      This course provides an advanced exploration of interactive media and publications. Complex DVD-ROM media are developed.

      Prerequisites: DA530

    • DA620 Advanced Video and Motion Graphics 

      Students explore sophisticated concepts and applications of motion graphics used in the production of corporate videos and self promotion. Advanced techniques in video production are emphasized.

      Prerequisites: DA520

    • DA630 Advanced User Interface Design 

      Advanced HTML coding will be mastered with the ability to create Cascading Style Sheets, forms, tables, and frames. DHTML, JavaScript, Shockwave, and other web page enhancement effects will be introduced and explored to create dynamic, user-friendly web sites. Focus will be on writing precise code and project management.

    • DA660 Senior Seminar 

      This course prepares students for the transition from student to design professional. Career options are explored and students set goals for individual career paths. Emphasis is placed on developing and presenting a portfolio that is targeted to the job search. Students develop a job search strategy with the assistance of the Graduate Services department. Emphasis is placed on developing interview techniques, and preparing résumés and portfolios. Career paths and options are explored in depth through lecture, guest speakers and research.
