Chef Monica D. Smith , a 2012 Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts graduate of The Art Institute of Charlotte, a branch of Miami International University of Art & Design, recently demoed her recipes on-stage at a special event at Thomasboro Academy in Charlotte, where she cooked alongside Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.
Families in attendance originally thought they were there for a PTA appreciation dinner when they were surprised by Cam Newton as part of his annual Santa Cam Surprise Sleigh event in which he gives back to individuals throughout the city of Charlotte. Working together, Chef Monica and Cam Newton prepared sweet and spicy chicken, zucchini pizza bites, and peppermint bark for a total of 25 families. At the end of the evening, Newton gave each family a bag of groceries with the ingredients from Chef Monica’s recipes, plus a $500 Food Lion gift card.
Chef Monica has worked as a presenting chef for regional stage and road shows for Food Lion since 2012. She is also an accomplished TV and radio personality, having appeared on the Food Network’s series Guy’s Grocery Games and Cutthroat Kitchen as well as Chef Jeff Henderson’s Flip My Food. She is a regular guest chef on Charlotte’s NBC and CBS local news programs and the top chef contributor for Charlotte Prowler Magazine.
In addition to her culinary endeavors, Chef Monica has worked as a high school foods teacher and with Gaston County School Nutrition, ordering and distributing food and supplies for over 33,000 students. She has over 20 years of experience in upper management and leadership positions within the food service, hotel, event planning, and hospitality industries.
