Two Fashion Design students from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale recently featured their fashion lines during the 2018 Fort Lauderdale Fashion Week. Jessica Melgarejo and Sophia Name presented their apparel to a crowd of more than 400 guests from the fashion industry as part of an emerging designers feature.
Name and Melgarejo were the only amateur designers selected to showcase their creations at Fort Lauderdale’s premier fashion event. Their lines were presented alongside South Florida professional designers and boutiques that included local sensations G. Destin Collections, Hot Miami Styles, and Mariana London Swimwear.
Melgarejo is working towards her Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Design* and is in her final quarter at Ai Fort Lauderdale. Originally from Peru, Melgarejo has been enthusiastic about fashion her entire life and developed a passion as a young girl watching her grandmother sew. After briefly attending college in Peru for journalism, she was inspired by her teenage children to complete her degree. Melgarejo listened to her artistic voice and chose The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale for her degree in fashion.
Name will also graduate in June with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Design*. Fashion has been a part of her life since her days as a child when her grandmother was a seamstress. Her mother is a civil engineer in her home country of Venezuela and Name grew up with a passion for drawing and painting. After learning about The Art Institutes during a high school exchange program, she choose Ai Fort Lauderdale to pursue her fashion degree.
Now in its third year, Fort Lauderdale Fashion Week offers an international platform for regionally-based designers to seamlessly connect with media and buyers. The event aims to increase domestic awareness of home-grown fashion and increase the global presence of Fort Lauderdale’s designers.
