College Scholarships and Grants for Veteran and Military Students

A wide variety of financial aid, including scholarships and grants, is available to the veterans and military personnel who have served or are serving our country. Beyond the federal benefit options you may be most familiar with (which we’ll still touch on here), just a little bit of digging may reveal institutional scholarship and grant opportunities for veterans and military service members that you never knew existed!

Federal Military and Veterans Educational Benefits
The Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provide educational benefits designed to help eligible veterans, their dependents, and military personnel acquire the education they need to achieve their professional goals outside of the military. These include educational benefits including, but not limited to, Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill ®, the Yellow Ribbon Program, Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill, and Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation for eligible veterans and their dependents and Tuition Assistance for military personnel. Our Military Benefits page and Military Brochure provide additional information.

Military and veteran students should also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to ensure they receive all grants for which they may qualify.

State Scholarships and Grants for Veteran and Military Students
Many states have financial aid to help eligible veterans and their families as well as military personnel pursue their educational goals. These may include college grants, scholarships, and tuition waivers. Because each state’s programs function differently, we recommend searching online for information specific to your state or contacting your state government directly.

Institutional Scholarships and Grants for Veteran and Military Students
As you’re researching colleges, look for educational institutions that offer scholarships or grants for veterans, their eligible dependents, and/or active military service members. At The Art Institutes, for example, we are proud to offer qualifying military service members, veterans and their families students our own institutional scholarship opportunities. At The Art Institute of Pittsburgh—Online Division, eligible veterans (and their dependent spouses and children) and military service members can receive a military tuition scholarship of 10% for any program.

National Organizations Offering Scholarships and  Grants for Veteran and Military Students
Organizations throughout the U.S. offer grants and scholarships to eligible students based on criteria ranging from academic achievement to athletic ability to heritage to, of course, military service. Many scholarship search sites allow you to easily locate national scholarship and grant opportunities designed specifically for veterans and military service members. Military-related organizations including, but not limited to, AMVETS, the Pat Tillman Foundation, and the Army Women’s Foundation, may also offer scholarship and grant opportunities for veterans and military service members. You can even ask your local VA for recommendations and information on additional community and regional scholarships for which you may apply.

GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government Web site at http://www.benefits.va.gov/GIBILL/Trademark_Terms_of_Use.asp.

Financial aid is available to those who qualify.

For students receiving the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) educational benefits, some state and institutional grants and scholarships may reduce the amount of certified tuition and fees by the school to the VA for payment.
