“I’m fortunate to already have the experience of presenting a collection last season. This time, I have a much better ideas of what this process demands.”

Lavan Chxeidze is excited to be presenting at New York Fashion Week for the second time. He was born in the Republic of Georgia and moved to New York City at the age of eight—eventually returning to the Republic of Georgia as a teen to study fine arts.

While there, he became interested in the history of his last name, its connection to nobility, and its association with luxury and high fashion. His artistic skills were showcased at a solo gallery show in the Republic of Georgia—and he earned a scholarship to the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Lavan also received an Art League Medal from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

His new collection for New York Fashion Week, “Love Letters from Berlin,” is very personal. “It’s inspired by Berlin in the 1920s and 1940s, especially the history of hardship facing the gay population during that time,” he says.

During his design process, he envisioned a cabaret performer, imprisoned by a deteriorating Berlin, trying to regain freedom for the LGBTQ community. “With my collection, I want to push what the boundaries of menswear and challenge the constructs of gender-appropriate clothing.” He completed a large amount of research to incorporate Berlin’s cultural and fashion history into his designs. “To challenge societal normal for menswear, I decided to use unconventional fabrics in new and innovative ways. Don't succumb to the normalites that others bestow upon you. Find your own voice and identity. Ask yourself what can I give that others won't.”

Lavan says that his education provided both the technical and business knowledge needed to elevate his career. And he says that his creative inspiration comes from the work of John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela and Vivienne Westwood.

Keep up with all the designers here!

Stream the show live at 8PM on Tuesday, September 15.
