Faculty Feature: Meet Award-Winning Chef John Miller

In 2012, Chef John Miller traveled with a team of professional chefs to Erfurt, Germany, where they would represent the southwestern United States in the 2012 World Culinary Olympics and compete among chefs from 49 other countries. Together, the team brought home seven bronze medals, and, since then, Chef Miller has continued to grow his career.

Today, this award-winning chef owns his own catering and events firm in addition to assisting with three catering companies in the San Diego area. He’s also the Assistant Academic Director and an instructor at The Art Institute of California—San Diego, a campus of Argosy University, where he shares his knowledge and advice with students. “There is always so much to learn, and if you stay humble, use your ears twice as much as your mouth, and ask lots of questions, your career and life can get better and better every day,” he tells his students.

Now, he’s also sharing his culinary expertise with the public in The Art Institutes system of schools’ GETcreative hands-on classes and workshops. At GETCreative, Chef Miller—also a member of The American Culinary Federation—has taught evening and weekend classes such as The Whole Hog: Delicious Eats from Head to Tail, Contemporary Thanksgiving Side Dishes, and Sausage from Scratch.

With more than 10 years of experience as an instructor, plus an extensive background of culinary and management experience working throughout the US and in the Virgin Islands, Chef Miller has true talent and passion for his craft. “Food is the most fundamental and intuitive way people meet, communicate, and commune,” he says. “Food has always been at the center of organized culture, and people communicate better through food than through any other medium.”
