On February 23, 2016, industrial design students from The Art Institute of California—Orange County, a campus of Argosy University, joined over 16,000 people at the Honda Center for the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks’ S.C.O.R.E. (Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation & Education) event. In addition to providing a day of education for elementary students, the hockey team announced the winner of its “Light the Lamp” Challenge.
The five-member industrial design team from The Art Institute of California—Orange County came out on top.
For the challenge, the Ducks teamed up with Autodesk, a company that creates 3D design, engineering, and entertainment software. Students participating in the competition were guided through step-by-step tutorials using Autodesk software in 3D design and electronics. They were tasked with building a table top hockey rink with working lights and sounds.

Dru Blake, student president of the school’s industrial design team, said that the Ducks reached out to his group, encouraging their participation in the competition. Dru and his team had about one month to get a working model together to show at the S.C.O.R.E event.
“Our industrial design team meets every Tuesday to brainstorm on new ideas and how we can support our community. We focused on how we can really reach the fans and make sure they have a good time because in the end, it’s all about the fans and their engagement. Without fans there are no games. So we focused on the lights and what the fans would like to see,” said Blake.
The team from The Art Institute of California—Orange County believes that the secret to their success was putting the spotlight on the fan experience. “[We thought our competitors] would focus more on the component side. But the fans can’t see the components.”
All students on the winning team are working toward a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design:
- Dru Blake
- Jovani Zavala
- Marion Lee
- Britton Plowman
- Shasta Metcalfe
