During my last quarter at The Art Institute of California—Inland Empire, I took a course called Portfolio I, which focuses on helping students to build their accumulated work into a professional portfolio of work. Completed portfolios are presented at the school’s Portfolio Show for graduating students—which also attracts employers hoping to fill open positions in their organizations.

From my Portfolio Show experience, I’ve created a checklist of things that can help you to make your portfolio presentation the best that It can be:

• Always bring a backup of your props/work, because it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the unexpected challenges you might face.
• Make sure to brush up on your people skills. Much of the show includes interacting with the public and answering questions about your projects. I know there are many people who don’t necessarily feel comfortable with public speaking, and I would have liked this advice when I was a student.
• Do your research. Building a portfolio can be expensive due to printing prices and props. Compare print services from different businesses to find the one that works best for your budget.

The Portfolio Show was a great experience for me and it should be something that all students look forward to. It’s the first chance to showcase our hard work to family and friends—but most importantly to industry professionals. I left the Portfolio Show with multiple job possibilities and a confidence boost that prepared me to take on the real world.
