The Art Institute of California – Orange County helps to celebrate Birthday bash for Dalai Lama

(Orange County, July 2015)  The Dalai Lama celebrated his 80th birthday at the Honda Center in Anaheim on July 5 as a kick-off to the Global Compassion Summit.  The Art Institute of California – Orange County, a campus of Argosy University presented the Dalai Lama with a cake which was featured in more than 40 media outlets across the country.

The culinary team crafted a cake that stood almost 8ft tall with a gold and maroon theme. The cake was covered in fondant and sprayed a muted metallic gold, draped with maroon fondant to mimic his robes, with large (3-4”) gum paste flowers inspired by his garden. The campus culinary team worked with industrial design experts to build an acrylic structure to support the cake with the bottom built into the base, while adding a light system to illuminate the cake. The cake team consisted of Chef Colleen Johnson, Bryan Householder, and culinary students from the campus.
