(Orange County, September 2015) The Art Institute of California – Orange County, a campus of Argosy University is hosting Batter’s Up Cooking Classes for the Pujols Family Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Albert Pujols, a Dominican-American first baseman and nine-time MLB All-Star for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Pujols Family Foundation helps those living with Down syndrome and aims to improve the lives of the impoverished in the Dominican Republic.
Participants from the foundation who have Down syndrome will be split into teams to prep and execute a four or five course lunch. After preparing the meal, they will be serving their guest, which is usually a parent or immediate family member. The focus of the event is teaching a cooking class, but more than that it is about empowering and encouraging individuals with Down syndrome. The event also serves as an opportunity for families who have a loved one with Down syndrome to connect with other families in the same situation and allow them to build a network that offers mutual support.
Chef Michael Backouris from The Art Institute of California – Orange County is leading the project. This is the third year he has managed these cooking classes for the Pujols Family Foundation.
