The Art Institute of Fort Worth Holds Interview with Milton Glaser
October 19, 2015
(Ft Worth, October 2015) On October 14, The Art Institute of Fort Worth, a campus of South University hosted a Skype interview with Milton Glaser, the celebrated graphic designer who created the iconic I ♥ New York logo and many more famous designs, logos, posters, and other art.
The interview consisted of several questions about his experiences of being a graphic artist. When asked to describe and explain his perception of the ethics of graphic design, he replied “Good design is good citizenship; in other words, do no harm.” He said that he had no “favorite” anything when asked about his favorite graphic design, but that the best part of being a designer is the process itself, be true to himself, not to compromise. He talked about the importance of teaching and learning, and he said that he gets inspiration from everything.
He said the when he designed the New York logo (created pro bono), he ultimately realized that his simple design, in a way, saved New York. It was designed in the 1970s as part of a media campaign when New Yorkers were miserable, depressed, and the city was filthy. His logo became a rallying point for improvement. After 9/11, the symbol had a similar effect. People were scared and vulnerable, and his logo helped them take their city back
You can look at his website (http://www.miltonglaser.com/the-work/) for more examples of his work.
