Top 5 Tips for Transfer Students
September 19, 2016
Transferring to a new school is an exciting time, but it can also be an overwhelming process. If you’re an Art Institutes transfer student, you have enough on your plate without having to stress over every last detail of the transfer process. That’s why we put together these Top 5 Tips for Transfer Students. Armed with the right information, all you have to do is get excited for the next phase of your student journey!
1. You may be eligible to transfer your credits*
You’ve already put in a lot of work into your diploma program or bachelor’s degree program, so if you’re transferring colleges, make sure it counts! To find out if you can transfer your credits from a school like ITT Technical Institute, set up time to speak to an admissions counselor. Transfer policies vary so make sure you speak to a local rep at the right Art Institutes school.
2. Map out your courses
Spend some time familiarizing yourself with how to transfer colleges, and the course listings at each Ai campus. Due to differences in state laws, licensing and accreditation, each school will have slightly different offerings and degree paths.
For example, if you’re a student affected by the ITT Tech school closing, you might be interested in our software development, game design, industrial design or instructional technology degrees.
Knowing your remaining class requirements will help you stay on track to graduate with your desired degree.
3. Get to know your academic advisor
Our advisors are here to help! These professionals can help you navigate the process and get you set up for success. We recommend scheduling recurring meetings throughout the academic year to make sure you aren’t your only advocate—we’re on your team!
4. Get involved
College is about more than just classes! Each school offers a host of clubs, activities and groups so you can indulge your extra-curricular interests and maybe find some new ones. We encourage transfer students to join clubs so they can start school on the right foot, get to know our creative student body, and start the school year being #AiProud! Follow your school on social to get day-by-day updates on campus events and activities.
5. Attend Orientation
While there are lots of great resources to get you started on the right track, nothing beats new student orientation. Prior to your first day of classes, these sessions provide you an opportunity to meet campus staff and administrators, pick up your supply kits and ID badge, receive your official class schedule, and meet other incoming students. Check with your school’s admissions office for the date and time of your new student orientation!
*Transfer credit is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The Art Institutes system of schools offers no guarantee that credit earned at another institution will be accepted into a program of study offered by The Art Institutes system of schools.
