Culinary Students Help to Create One-Ton Cake for Omni
March 21, 2016
Recently, two culinary students at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh helped to construct a one-ton cake to celebrate the Omni William Penn Hotel’s 100th anniversary.
Samantha Santti and Shelby Costo, both of whom are working toward an Associate of Science in Baking & Pastry, worked with Prantl’s Bakery to build and decorate the cake. The finished cake stood over 5 feet tall, measured 5 feet in diameter, and weighed in at about 2,000 pounds.
To make the cake, the baking team used 366 pounds of flour, nearly 2,500 eggs, and 28 gallons of soybean oil. It was finished off with 600 pounds of icing.
Santti and Costo helped to pass out 10,000 pieces of cake during the anniversary celebration.
