Sheila Walden, Academic Director of Fashion at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, was recently named among the winners of the 2016 Hispanic Women of Distinction Award.

The Hispanic Women of Distinction awards bring to the forefront the contributions of Hispanic women from South Florida.  It’s been presented annually since 2001 by Bank of America in partnership with Latina Style Magazine. Co-sponsors include Latin Business Today and Sylvester Cancer Center.

Walden has been with The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale since 2004 and has served in her current role as Academic Director of Fashion since 2012. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design from the school in 2010. She went on to earn a Master of Art in Design & Media Management from Miami International University of Art & Design in 2012.

Walden is one of 12 women earning the award in 2016. The list of winners includes Marielena DeSanctis, Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs at Broward College; Victoria Saldala, Director of ESOL programs at Broward County Schools, and Katherine Fernandez Rundle, State Attorney for Miami-Dade County.

The 15th anniversary of the Hispanic Women of Distinction Charity luncheon will be held on August 12, 2016 at Signature Grand in Davie, Florida. The celebration will be attended by philanthropists, business leaders, elected officials, and socialites. The event pays tribute to Latina professionals who are strengthening the social fabric of this country and making inroads in the leadership pipeline. The event benefits the Light of the World Clinic, a free healthcare facility founded by the late Dr. Erwin Vasquez in 1989.
