New Head Chef at Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham to Serve Up “Fully Rounded Food Professionals”

The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham, a branch of The Art Institute of Charlotte, announced that Chef Joseph Brown will now lead its culinary department, including the popular student-run restaurant, The District at 410 Blackwell.
With more than a quarter century experience to call upon, Chef Joseph said his focus will be graduating students fully equipped to excel at all aspects of food service, from creating delicacies to balancing books.
“To be successful in today’s demanding market, a culinary graduate must be adept in cuisine, but also management, marketing and much more,” explained Chef Joseph. “The fact that The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham exists in the heart of such a thriving and ‘foodie’ region demonstrates the need to be versatile. Our graduates will emerge ready to work at a high-end restaurant, university, hospital, convention center or corporate campus.”
From UNC-G to The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham
Chef Joseph’s career has certainly touched all these important bases. A graduate of Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, he went on to work in restaurants, to teach at high schools in Durham and Hillsborough as well as at Durham Technical Community College and Vance-Granville Community College.
Starting in 2008, Chef Joseph served for three years as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 2011, he joined the culinary team at The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham. He is an active member of the American Culinary Federation, the Foodservice Education Learning Community and the National Restaurant Association.
“Chef Joseph’s background makes him well equipped to train versatile graduates, while his artistry and enthusiasm will leave all his students inspired," said Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham President Chris Mesecar.
The District Returns
As part of his new duties, Chef Joseph will oversee The District at 410 Blackwell, the student-run restaurant located -- along with The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham -- in the Fowler Building at American Tobacco Campus.
