The Art Institute of Colorado Explores the Fashionable Life of Molly Brown
March 7, 2015
Recently, fashion students at The Art Institute of Colorado have been immersed in the glamour of fashion icon Molly Brown. Partnering with the Molly Brown House Museum, students were tasked with two unique challenges: to create fashion plate drawings for some of Molly Brown's ensembles and to create a modern interpretation of a historical design based on Molly Brown's aesthetic. The winners of both of these challenges will be chosen on Friday, March 20.
These projects were more than just a fun way for the students to show off their fashion prowess; they were learning tools that took the form of two special courses at The Art Institute of Colorado. This quarter’s Advanced Fashion Illustration Class led students through the process of researching the life and times of Molly Brown, finding newspaper articles with descriptions of her clothing that do not have corresponding photographs, and through those descriptions, creating fashion plate drawings of her ensembles. The winning fashion plates will receive a prize package from the Molly Brown House Museum and will be sold in the museum gift shop.
The project in this quarter’s Specialized Pattern making Class had students create a garment with a modern interpretation based on a historically accurate design. The garment had to show couture sewing techniques and reflect Molly Brown's aesthetic. The winning garments will also receive a prize package from the Molly Brown House Museum and will go on display in the museum’s fashion exhibit – Diamonds in the Daytime: The Changing Fashions of Margaret Brown's World. The garments will also be included in an upcoming fashion show – Vintage Looks and Modern Twists – A Fashion Show.
