Assignments, the student-operated restaurant at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Colorado, was a first-time fine dining participant in this year’s A Taste of Colorado local food festival.

A four-day event over Labor Day weekend, A Taste of Colorado features the offerings of over 50 area food establishments, 270 marketplace artisans and vendors, six entertainment stages, and educational programs promoting the diverse cultural and western heritage of the region. Over 550,000 people attended this year’s event.

Assignments Restaurant was one of six fine dining restaurants, and received three awards:  1st Place for both Best Décor and Menu Uniqueness, as well as Honorable Mention for Taste.

Culinary students, along with Art Institute of Colorado Culinary Academic Director Chef David Hendricksen, Chef Instructor Donna Kennedy and Restaurant Manager Amber Gyhra, served items from the summer lunch menu, including Spanish white gazpacho with manchego crisp and grapes, spicy chicken sandwich with gorgonzola mayo and carrot-celery slaw, and balsamic strawberries over rosemary scones with lemon curd.

The white gazpacho was the most popular item, and made The Examiner Denver “Five Tastes to Try at A Taste of Colorado” list.  The menu items were also featured on Channel 7 news with The Gabby Gourmet, and Jesse Rosser participated in a video interview by a local food blog editor.

Art Institute of Colorado Culinary student Leah Hayes and Chef Donna Kennedy won the Ready, Set, Cook competition on Friday, September 3, and Culinary student Jesse Rosser and Randolph’s Executive Sous Chef Garrett Whitlow were finalists.

The team also participated in cooking demos throughout the weekend. Art Institute of Colorado Chef Instructor Craig Winter gave an ice carving demonstration, and also served guests chocolate truffles and Assignments’ pineapple sorbetto. Chef Hendricksen, along with culinary students Moe Maziarz and Nikki Olst, gave a demonstration of the strawberry flambé.

“A Taste of Colorado was a great opportunity for Assignments Restaurant to represent the school and to receive exposure in a foodie environment,” Chef Donna Kennedy, Chef Instructor at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Colorado said.

Assignments is already preparing for next year’s event.
