Atlanta is a vibrant city that's an eclectic mix of tree-lined neighborhoods and high-rise condos and skyscrapers. The largest city in Georgia, Atlanta is the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr. and welcomed people from across the world in the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games.
Atlanta had its beginnings in the 1830s and has kept growing. Built by pioneering entrepreneurs of transportation and business, Atlanta has always been a city of vision. After General Sherman's army burned and pillaged the city during the Civil War, Atlantans adopted the mythical phoenix as their symbol—rising from the ashes to build what renowned nineteenth-century Atlanta journalist Henry Grady called "a brave and beautiful city."
Atlanta is a prominent business center with major employers including The Coca-Cola Company, CNN-Time Warner, Home Depot, Delta Air Lines, AT&T, and Georgia Pacific. Many students at The Art Institute of Atlanta take advantage of internship opportunities with these companies to build experience in their field of study.
Sports fans follow Atlanta teams including the Braves, Hawks, and Falcons. And cultural outings include visits to the Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Alliance Theatre. The city's High Museum of Art is one of the most visited museums in the world according to The Art Newspaper.
The Art Institute of Atlanta was established in 1949. Fifty years later, the current location was completed—a five-story facility located approximately 15 minutes north of the city center. Each of the five floors offers industry-related technology that allows students to learn in a career-focused environment
