I get to see [my students'] confidence improve along with their skills. Sam Worley , Interior Design Instructor , The Art Institute of Atlanta
Was there a defining moment when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?
My art teacher in high school recommended that I look into classes at The Art Institute of Atlanta. That was three degrees and 30 years ago. I haven’t looked back.
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?
I talk about whatever project we are currently working on and relate them to projects from my past in an effort to help my students to avoid the mistakes that I have learned from.
What’s your favorite class assignment and how do you use it to inspire students to push themselves beyond their perceived limits?
I love the second project in the Auto CAD class. The assignment really requires them to stretch their abilities. As I push them to do more during the execution this project, I get to see their confidence improve along with their skills.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
That while interior design is a creative field, it is still a profession. Act accordingly. Be on time, dress appropriately and do what you say you are going to do.
