SXSW Gaming Features Student Created Games From The Art Institutes
The Gaming industry isn’t playing around. In 2016, the worldwide gaming industry hit $91 billion in revenue. At The Art Institute of Austin, a branch of The Art Institute of Houston, we’re proud to be at the forefront of educating future game developers through our Game Art & Design program. This year, true to our Austin roots, we partnered with SXSW Gaming to support and showcase the next generation of game creators.
SXSW Gaming Student Showcase sponsored by The Art Institutes
By sponsoring the SXSW Gaming Student Showcase, The Art Institutes gave SXSW Gaming attendees a first-hand glimpse of some of the best and brightest game creators and the games that we’ll be playing in weeks, months, and even years, to come. Included in the Showcase was From Ashes, an anticipated new game from students at The Art Institute of Phoenix.
From Ashes is a PvP-focused MOBA for PC that pits brutal gladiators against one another in arena-style battle. Multiplayer gameplay takes place across three modes and is driven by a tight, intuitive control scheme. Players can command one of four playable champions while pursuing map objectives, kill streaks and a spot on global leaderboards. Over the course of SXSW Gaming, over 1,000 matches were played!
Playtesting at SXSW Gaming
In addition to sponsoring the Student Showcase, we were also on the expo floor allowing people to play student-created games currently in development. They included:
Rooted Deep Within
This unique, narrative-driven game follows Joseph Jean-Pierre as he uncovers a mystery that spans multiple time periods. Except, Joseph’s enemy isn’t another person—it’s the actual house he’s exploring. The story begins in an old mansion near the Louisiana swamps. To find out what happens next, you'll have to play it for yourself.
Like the name suggests, Retro Ride is a first-person racing game that harkens back to a bygone era—the art deco style of the 1930s. You assume the role of Massimo as he races around Retro Ride City to pick up loot, outrun the cops, and elude mob bosses who are hot on his tail.
Super Creepy and Rare Encounters (S.C.A.R.E.)
Ready for a brand new take on the horror genre? This one-of-a-kind game delivers. Super Creepy and Rare Encounters turns convention on its head by putting players in the role of the haunted house. Your job is to scare off visitors by triggering encounters around the mansion. Ready to learn more? Check out a preview of the game here.
In space no one can hear you…smuggle? That’s the idea behind this stealth game that puts you in the role of a smuggler who works for a private mining company. Your job is to sneak past fellow miners and security while grabbing as many rare gems and metals as you can. Think you’ve got what it takes to go undetected?
