My core advice is for each student to fully be themselves. Luanne Stovall , Lecturer, Design Foundations , The Art Institute of Austin, a branch of The Art Institute of Houston
What would you say is the defining moment in your life when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?
My father was an artist and taught art at a high school in the community. I always knew I wanted to be an artist.
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience to provide an industry veteran's sense of the realities / challenges / opportunities of the profession?
In the classroom environment, I continually draw from my experience as an artist and entrepreneur. I feel that this is the single most important contribution I can offer—to provide insight into real-world opportunities and challenges that face creative professionals in the current economic environment.
Is there a class assignment that exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring? Similarly, how does your approach inspire each student to push themselves beyond their own perceived limits?
For each key piece of learning, I assign a specific challenge to students. Each is given the provided learning goals, but all are asked to solve the challenge in a unique way, using their own ideas and research materials. For the final project in my color class, I ask students to design and create their personal interpretation to the twelve chromatic strategies, using materials and processes of choice.
What role does collaboration contribute to students' success, especially when students from other programs contribute to the same project?
Collaboration with other students and colleagues is the single most important skill that a student can learn, outside of a strong personal commitment to creatively develop their own work. The role of collaboration in their future success cannot be overestimated.
In your opinion, what is the single most important thing you impart to your students to help them succeed in your class and in the real world? Alternatively, what is the most critical advice you would offer any student as he / she embarks on a creative career?
My core advice is for each student to fully be themselves, as each has a unique viewpoint and experience to offer. Always keep an open mind, be curious, work as hard as you can, and never fail to respect others.
