What was the inspiration for your artwork?
It’s a book cover design I did for Publication Design class where we had to design and publish a whole book. I tiled it “A to Z of being Rikki” and described various roles I play in life. For the cover, I was inspired by the cover of Therese Anne Fowler’s “A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald.” I loved how Zelda’s face peeks out from the huge letter Z and wanted to do my own take on it.
Please explain what we are seeing in your pieces and (MEDIA USED, TECHNOLOGY, OR SOFTWARE USED) how you went about creating them.
The book is a fun biography where I describe various roles I play in life using every letter in the alphabet and playing around with huge drop caps and experimental layouts for body copy. I used the same black and white photo of myself for each spread but kept it interesting by superimposing different vector artworks over my face that corresponded with the title of the spread. For example, for A I put Austinite, so I put hipster glasses on my face. For R I put Rock n’ Rolla and made my face look like I was punk rocker. The vector work was done in illustrator and whole book was put together in InDesign.
