I worked for eleven years in information technology in the Navy. In 2009, I decided to pursue my interest in a field that would prove to be my passion: design.
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?
I’ve worked for clients like the Weather Channel and local TV stations in Atlanta and Charleston. I learned the rigors of designing in production environments that change as quickly as the news and evolving technology. I built skills in broadcast and motion graphics, as well as print and web advertising. And I bring all this professional experience into the classroom to make sure students understand what will be expected of them as creative professionals.
What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?
One project requires students to track camera movements with Adobe After Effects on footage they take themselves. They then digitally insert text or graphics into the environment. It presents them with the concepts of working in a digital 3D environment while paying attention to lighting and movement when filming. I find that students always rise to meet the challenge—and often surprise themselves.
How does collaboration contribute to students’ success?
It’s important that, when students make the transition into professional environments, they know how to work on a team. It’s important that they know what’s expected of them—and what they can expect from their co-workers.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
Be tenacious! Become a geek about this stuff. And keep learning.
