I make it a point to work industry-related anecdotes and experiences into our discussions. I think it helps students connect what happens inside the classroom to the real world.
What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?
One particular assignment requires students to collaborate with other departments to produce actual promotional materials for school activities. It’s a way to encourage them to create an actual, real-world project in a safe environment.
In what way do you inspire students to push themselves beyond their own perceived limits?
I encourage them to self-assess their projects. It forces them to step back and look at their own work more critically.
How does collaboration contribute to students’ success?
Working together on projects lets students discover their own strengths and weaknesses, which is key to improving their skills.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
I try to give them an in-depth knowledge of how things work in the real world.
What’s the most critical advice you would offer any student embarking on a creative career?
Your name will be forever attached everything you produce...and your name is everything in this business.
