Program Overview

In the Interior Design program, you'll study the design, safety, and usability issues of creating the spaces where we live, work, and play. Coursework focuses on space planning, traffic patterns, and the colors, surfaces and furnishings that make surroundings comfortable and livable. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as draftsperson, facilities planner, interior designer/decorator, or space planner.

The Art Institute of Charlotte Design Director Named to ASID Board The Art Institute of Charlotte Design Director Named to ASID Board

(Charlotte, NC July 2015)  Deborah R. Dunlap, Design Director at The Art Institute of Charlotte, a campus of South University, has been elected to serve on the 2015-2017 Carolinas Chapter Board for the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) as the Financial Director.  Ms. Dunlap will serve on a board for both North Carolina and South Carolina and is the second appointment to the Carolinas Chapter Board, which she is currently serving as the 2013-2015 Professional Development Director.   

From the ASID website:  The American Society of Interior Designers was founded in 1975 and is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2015.  More than 24,000 members engage in a variety of professional programs and activities through a network of 48 chapters throughout the United States and Canada.  The society’s 13,500 practicing interior designers work in all areas of commercial and residential design. ASID Industry Partners include more than 2,000 Industry Partner member companies with 6,000 individual representatives, uniting the professional designer with manufacturers of design –related products and services.  The Society’s membership also includes nearly 5,000 students of interior design.  ASID has more than 280 student chapters at colleges, universities and design schools with 2-year and 4-year programs throughout the United States as well as several virtual chapters through online institutions.

The Art Institute of Charlotte is one of The Art Institutes, a system of over 50 schools throughout North America. Program Description

You get that irresistible urge to rearrange furniture, repaint your kitchen or change the “feel” of your office. Your friends marvel at your ability to change a room from impersonal to inviting. Your living space isn't just a place to hang out; it's a creative statement of who you are and what you love to do - interior design.

This is an arena where color, texture, fabric, and light paint an inviting environment. Interior designers must have a thorough understanding of efficient space planning, color, pattern, lighting, furniture, and materials. In early courses, you’ll learn the basics of drawing, drafting, color and design, along with the fundamentals you'll learn the basics of drawing, drafting, color, design, and the fundamentals of space planning and perspective. Graduates will be prepared for entry-level interior design jobs.
