Founded in 1973 as the American Business & Fashion Institute, the school was originally located in the Charlotte Merchandise Mart and offered students programs in Secretarial Science and Fashion Merchandising. Over 25 years later in 1999, American Business & Fashion Institute joined The Art Institutes system of schools and changed its name to The Art Institute of Charlotte. The school moved to its current location in September of 2001.
The Art Institute of Charlotte occupies 62,600 square feet of space in the LakePointe Office Park. Here, you'll find professional equipment and resources along with experienced, committed faculty. The school is conveniently located between Interstate Highways 85 and 77 near Charlotte's Douglas International Airport.

Many students choose to live in school-sponsored housing that is located close to campus. A shuttle service transports housing students to and from campus Monday through Saturday. The apartments are fully furnished with a washer/dryer, refrigerator, stove, utilities (electricity and water), basic cable, wifi, and ample storage. Additional amenities include a swimming pool, fitness center, and clubhouse.
