Act on your dreams now, and tweak them as you go. Alease Michelle Jones , Fashion Instructor , The Art Institute of Charlotte, a branch of Miami International University of Art & Design
Was there a defining moment when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?
My defining moment is when I enrolled in my first college art and design class. I was in love! Creative people all around me!
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?
I invite guest speakers to class share their insights. I take students on location so they can see the fashion business in action. I strongly believe that you learn best when you’re able to put that learning into action.
What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?
My favorite assignment is target research. I know it doesn’t sound exciting at first, but once we dive into the demographic and psychographic information, students start to see how it connects to creating sales copy and design that resonate with consumers.
How does collaboration contribute to students’ success?
Collaboration is a big part of my teaching. After all, working with others is how it works in the real world. In my experience, the better you are at working with others, the more successful you’ll become.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
Wait for the perfect moment, and it’ll never happen. Act on your dreams now, and tweak them as you go.
