Work on your networking skills, and always promote yourself and your art. Justin Leluika , Animation Instructor , The Art Institute of Charlotte, a branch of Miami International University of Art & Design
Was there a defining moment when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?
I used to draw on everything from napkins to furniture. I found myself telling a visual story and exploring new ideas whenever I had the chance.
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?
I believe that the best way to learn industry standards and gain experience is to dive into projects that relate to the career you want to pursue. It makes for a smooth transition from school to the workplace. So I stress the skills and practices students will need on the job, drawing on my own experience.
How does collaboration contribute to students’ success—particularly when students from various programs work together?
Collaboration contributes to students’ success because everything in art supports everything else, and adds to the bigger picture.
What’s the most critical advice you would offer any student embarking on a creative career?
Work on your networking skills, and always promote yourself and your art. It’s a small world out there, and someone always knows someone else. Use that to your advantage.
