Fort Lauderdale Faculty Member Publishes Creativity – A Sociological Approach Fort Lauderdale Faculty Member Publishes Creativity – A Sociological Approach

Monika Reuter, Ph.D. and sociology instructor at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale published a book that takes an in-depth look at the macro-sociological perspective of creativity. Creativity – A Sociological Approach explores the results of an on-going research project comparing students' ideas on creativity with employers' and industry professionals' views.

Reuter’s book discusses theories and models of creativity. It compares results from a six year research project that included 1,724 students and more than 400 employers' and industry professionals. The results of the study found that creativity is a social construct, closely tied to specific domains and fields.

Reuter has taught sociology and psychology at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale since 1999. She holds a Ph.D. from State University of New York at Albany, a Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Houston, and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Maryland. Reuter’s ongoing research project will expand to include analysis of college and university classes and a participant observation study in a creative design company.

Creativity – A Sociological Approach is published by Macmillan Palgrave Studies in Creativity and Culture.

Fort Lauderdale Faculty Member Discusses New Book at Tower Club Fort Lauderdale Faculty Member Discusses New Book at Tower Club

Kerry Szymanski Colda, a fashion instructor at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, recently served as a guest lecturer at the Fort Lauderdale Tower Club. She discussed new book, Seduce Your Customers, as well as marketing ideas to help small businesses.

Szymaski Colda’s book is based on a dating cycle. Seduce Your Customers provides readers with tools to identify and attract customers, increase sales by boosting retention rates, implement effective loyalty programs, study competition to prevent the dreaded “affair,” analyze business to avoid customer “divorce,” and manage overall marketing efforts more efficiently.

Szymanski Colda has worked for The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale since 2004. In addition to her teaching experience, she owns and manages her own business, Kerry Communications, where she assists clients with marketing needs, web, and social media content. The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale Hosts Lighting the Way Competition The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale Hosts Lighting the Way Competition

The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale recently hosted an awards ceremony for the first-ever “Lighting the Way” competition, which challenged interior and industrial design students to create a well-designed luminaire—using nothing more than a $5 lighting kit from Ikea. Students completed the designs during the spring 2016 quarter.

In total, 12 students from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale participated in the competition. Three winners received a one-year membership to the American Society of Interior Designers. The memberships were provided by local businessman Doug Feldman, owner of Douglas Feldman Design Studio.

Entries were judged on originality, construction, and overall impression. The competition was judged by three design and lighting experts from the South Florida area: Angela Colley, owner of A C Styles Designs; Marcia Exelrud, lighting designer at Bright Light Designs; and Roseann Alexis Minnet.
