Finding the Right Topic
August 16, 2017
Finding the Right Topic should always be audience-centered. When searching for a topic for an upcoming speech or presentation, you might ask yourself—what would I like for the audience to gain from this topic? Is the topic relevant to the audience? How can this topic impact the audience’s life for the better? Once you’ve answered these questions you will be better prepared to narrow your focus. When speaking in public, use the time to empower vs. solely providing information to your audience. Topics should be relevant, interesting and unique.
As you begin to think about an appropriate topic, consider your personal interests and familiar subjects.
These might include:
• Current environment
• Hobbies
• Organizations
• Passions
• Career options
To enhance your credibility as a speaker, research your topic from a variety of sources, ensuring accuracy.
• Websites
• Library
• Magazines
• Books/Bookstore
