August 27, 2018
Reynold Darthard bested over 700 competitors to take first place in H-E-B’s Quest for Texas’s Best competition. To earn the honor, Darthard—better known in Sugarland, Texas as Chef Rey—first was named a Houston-area finalist then went on to a two-day finals competition in Austin.
Darthard earned an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts from The Art Institute of Houston in 2004. He is a longtime chef in the Houston area, known for his innovative cheesecakes. As the first-place winner, he was awarded $20,000 for his entry—strawberry, raspberry, chocolate swirl, and sweet potato treats. According to an article in Houston Culture Map, Darthard began his culinary studies at the age of 37.
H-E-B’s competition was created to find new products to introduce to shoppers at the Texas-based supermarket chain. The final contestants were judged on quality, marketability, and product readiness.
