Sunday, March 4, 2018 marks a big day in the lives of 5 current students of The Art Institute of Houston.

Tennis stars Zina Garrison and Martina Navratilova joined forces to bring us Eat Play Love, a weekend long celebration, fusing the worlds of tennis, fashion and philanthropy and benefiting the Zina Garrison Academy. Winning a $1,000 scholarship for 1st place in the Eat Play Love athleisure fashion show was Tarah al Alshaik, BFA, Fashion Design. Tarah designed a two-piece ensemble using white denim and a mesh floral cut out fabric. Wilbert Brinkley, BFA, Fashion Design, took second place earning a $500 scholarship with his 2 piece menswear design. Rounding off the top 3, Blanca Vargas, BFA, Fashion Design, did not disappoint with her design, a sleeveless asymmetrical white top made of white textured denim with white miniskirt, earning her $400 towards tuition. Instructor Marina Saba provided mentorship for all 3 students for this event.

Dominick Lee, AAS, Culinary Arts, and Johnique Lang, AAS, Culinary Arts, were both awarded the Chef Rey Scholarship by Ai Houston alum and executive chef to the Houston Rockets, Chef Rey Dauthard, AAS, Culinary Arts, 2004. Both students met Chef Rey’s criteria which includes a grade point average above a 3.0, a 250-300 word essay describing financial need, maintaining employment for at least 15 hours per week in a food service establishment for the entire period of enrollment and full-time status as a student at Ai Houston.
