Your work has value. Reyes Ramirez , General Education Instructor , The Art Institute of Houston
Was there a defining moment when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?
I realized I wanted to be a creative professional when I saw that people who looked like me weren’t being taught or respected as true artists. I knew I had to do my part to change that.
What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?
We all have unique stories to tell that reveal something new about the reality of the industry. My assignments focus on honing students’ interests and how they identify themselves; I provide advice, exercises, and workshops on how to turn their inspirations and impulses into reality. Any rule that’s placed on art can be broken, just as any stereotype or story placed upon someone can be rewritten.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
There’s no single answer to an issue. Your work has value. No one can take away your art but you.
