Was there a defining moment when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?

When I cooked a large holiday meal for my family and received rave reviews.

How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?

I use a lot of examples of actual situations that I’ve found myself dealing with in the industry. It helps give students a real taste of what they can expect when they get out there.

What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?

The chef interview assignment in Concepts and Theories really pushes outside their comfort zones. They have to contact an industry professional and work with them to capture their story by asking the right questions.

How does collaboration contribute to students’ success?

In culinary lab classes, students are very dependent on their team’s they absolutely have to learn to communicate and coordinate their work.

What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?

What’s the most critical advice you would offer any student embarking on a creative career?

Stay focused—and learn from both your successes and failures.
