My name is Daniela Gabay. I’m an international student from Caracas, Venezuela currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Digital Photography at Ai MIU. Ever since I was little, I have loved photography as a way of telling stories. Although I enjoy most types of photography, my area of interest is either portraits or fashion, but specifically in children Photography. There’s something magical about capturing a child’s personality in a picture.

What was the inspiration for your artwork?

Most of my latest photographs, if not all, were created for my classes. Class assignments always motivate and push me to become a better photographer. I try to give a step forward in my photography with every new assignment I am given.

The “whimsical” picture—the one with the girl holding the bird—and the “love” one were inspired by a desire of mixing three of my favorite subjects - children, flowers, and fantasy. I wanted to create something different from what I’d been working on, but always keeping the whimsical touch that characterizes my photography. Through fairytale-like narratives and creative composites, I create imaginary worlds that are not seen through a normal lens, but mostly through dreams and movies.

The “dance” image was a candid shot. I wanted my images from that photo session to be the closest to natural as they could be, yet I wanted them to have a magical look, as if they were taken from an unwritten fairytale. My aim is to build an entire fantastical world and story in each single photograph I take. As a photographer and artist, I have always been impressed and thoroughly surprised as to how the children see the world, imagine, and interpret stories they conjure up in their dreams.

My photographs are taken with a D750 Nikon camera and the lens I use the most is a 135mm f/2. When I go shoot, I try to get a perfect SOOC (straight out of the camera) so the Photoshop retouching is minimal and I can spend more time compositing and creating the whimsical atmosphere my images portray.
