Beatriz Di Polo Wins Second Farrey’s Lighting Design Contest
February 20, 2015
Beatriz, who is originally from Venezuela, says that she grew up admiring some of the most prominent artists in her country, such as Jesus Rafael Soto and Carlos Cruz-Diez. “What makes me so passionate about Kinetic art is the illusion of movement created with the simple, yet calculated, repetition of form.”
Kinetic Lamp was created using clear plastic sheets, cardboard and silicon glue, but she envisions it being made of acrylic and brass for commercial manufacturing. The experience of participating in the contest was rewarding, “It was unbelievable. All the fixtures were spectacular. We all had different forms of inspiration and it was amazing to see how we transformed them into something so unique. Having the opportunity to exhibit my ideas in front of people who know so much about the field was incredible.” Beatriz declared.
The Interior Design student is currently attending her fourth year at Miami International University of Art & Design (MIU) and admits her passion for the area: “When we design a space, we hold in our hands the power to make people feel a certain way. Interior Design isn’t just about shaping a beautiful space – it’s about creativity and functionality working together.” Her plans for her future career include graduating in September, designing more lighting, and focusing on residential design.
Farrey’s Lighting Design Contest was conducted in partnership with MIU and The Education Foundation. The second edition of the event had 19 entrants guided by Professor Sable Stroud.
