Adopt a Classroom partners with Ai Minnesota to provide supplies to local schools

WHO/WHAT:
The Art Institutes International Minnesota is giving back to Minnesota public schools. Students and staff are donating money to local teachers, principals and administrators so that their students can succeed. The Art Institutes International Minnesota is partnering with Adopt A Classroom. According to Adopt A Classroom, more than 15 million children don’t have the resources they need to succeed in school and that teachers spend more than $1.6 billion a year stocking their own classrooms due to a lack of funding in schools.

The three Twin Cities schools receiving donations are South High School, Patrick Henry High School and Highland Park High School.

Former students will present checks to their former teachers at the “Creativity in the Classroom” event on Thursday, May 5. There will be food, prizes and attendees can contribute to the painting of a mural designed by Alumna Shane Anderson. Anderson is well known for creating murals for Minnesota schools and charities. The artist has worked with more than 20 different organizations and his work is displayed in the Mall of America.

Fashion and Design Students Design Dresses for Habitat for Humanity Fashion and Design Students Design Dresses for Habitat for Humanity

Fashion and design students from The Art Institutes International Minnesota will be creating non-traditional dresses for Habitat for Humanity’s “Hard Hat & Black Tie Gala.” The gala takes place April 9, 2016.

The dresses will have a construction theme and will be shown on 10 mannequins. This event’s theme is blue prints, and students are incorporating blue prints or blue material to tie their designs into the theme.

The mannequins and designs will be displayed on a riser to increase visibility. Participating students were provided construction materials and a $50 Menard’s gift card to gather the supplies needed for their creations. Event guests will be able to vote on their favorite design.

Sandy Swan, Program Coordinator, Fashion, at The Art Institutes International Minnesota, says that the event is this is a great project that allows students to work together across disciplines—from interior design to fashion design and retail management.

Student Victor Farmah to Present Fashion Collection at Liberian Entertainment Awards Student Victor Farmah to Present Fashion Collection at Liberian Entertainment Awards

Victor Farmah, who is working toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design at The Art Institutes International Minnesota, is one of the featured Liberian designers in this year's Liberian Entertainment Awards, the Liberian version of the Golden Globe Awards. The show will take place in Silver Spring, Maryland at the Fillmore Theater on March 12, 2016.  This is the first year that a fashion show is included in the Entertainment Awards, and Victor will be showcasing seven of his senior designs.

Victor’s collection is called “Huts” and is inspired by Liberian huts and his drawings and depictions of what Africa means to him. He adds that much of his inspiration was driven from the alignment of mud bricks as well as the unique and flamboyant drawing and painting illustrated on some of the huts he’s seen. “My collection is a contemporary collaboration between conservative and edgy, showcasing both sides of a strong independent African woman, told through the mixture of cotton and upholstery printed fabrics.”

Victor will also be taking part in “Flight of Fashion - Circle of Design” on April 23, 2016, as well as “La Dulce Fashion Show” on May 14. For the May show, his collection was inspired by ten of the meanings of the word ‘burgundy,’ as well as words that symbolize the relationship with his mother. This collection is called CR—his mom’s initials.

“The show will be a birthday present to her, as well as a late Mothers’ Day present. [It’s] my way of thanking her for all she's done for me. She knows nothing of the show. I'm hoping to surprise her with it the day of [the event].”
