Start Creating 3D Models and 3D Animations on These Apps

3D animators use professional computer software to design characters and scenes that come alive on the screen. To create such detailed and lifelike art—whether for video games, movies, educational software, or otherwise—requires many hours spent on the computer using state-of-the-art tools. However, if you’re considering
pursuing a degree and eventually a career in 3D animation, modeling and 3D animation apps can give you a small preview of the type of work involved in this field. So, before you dive fully into the world of 3D animation, here are two apps that can help you get started with exploring the possibilities of 3D.

Iyan 3D
Android | iOS

Iyan 3D is a 3D animation app that opens the door to making your own short 3D animation movies or simulations. To get started, find and select one of the characters, backgrounds, images, font, and props you’d like to animate from the Iyan 3D store. Alternatively, if you’re a more advanced user, you can rig your own OBJ model to animate. From there, you can begin animating your objects in each separate frame, setting the camera and lighting position to your preferred location. Ready-made animations also are available to apply to your characters. Once you’re satisfied, you can preview your animation and export still images or the full movie to your photo album.

3DC.io
Android | iOS

While not a full-fledged 3D animation app, the 3DC.io app allows you to build and share 3D models that can be imported into other software to animate. If you’re lucky enough to have access to a 3D printer, you can even 3D print your creations. This app works by allowing you to create 3D models using basic 3D shapes provided in the app, like a cube, sphere, or cylinder.

To build your model, you can move, rotate, and scale these shapes to manipulate them into a much more complex design. (Check out their gallery of existing art for examples.) Your final 3D can be exported in various formats for other 3D modeling software, game engines, and modding.

Enjoy using 3D animation apps? Intrigued by the idea of pursuing a career creating 3D models and animations? At The Art Institute of Pittsburgh - Online Division, our faculty can help you refine your raw talent and creativity and show you how to unlock the full power of modeling and 3D animation software.
