Was there a defining moment when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?
I’ve enjoyed art since I was a child. It’s been, and always will be, my true passion and calling.
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?
I’ve always tried to connect my professional experience to classroom material. It’s all about understanding why we do what we do, and what the industry expects from graduates. A good grasp of industry requirements helps students better prepare to succeed in their chosen field.
What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?
One example is the portfolio courses, with an assignment where students create leave-behind pieces. We set it up by talking about the target audience, the purpose of the pieces, and our goals. Do we want them to be unique, memorable, make a design statement? What’s our budget? Establishing clear goals helps students produce a final product that appeals to their target audience.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
Be honest and passionate about what you do.
