Was there a defining moment when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?
When I first started working with an Apple* IIe, I knew the creative profession was for me.
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?
I use my wide professional network to invite guest design leaders and thinkers to share their industry experiences via webinars. I make a point to demonstrate the importance of being professionally engaged the larger design community—from design students to design veterans. I enjoy cultivating and sharing the culture of design to help them develop professional practice and business ethics.
What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?
In G430 Portfolio, students reflect on their current body of work. I share benchmark approaches and strategies to develop their own visual voice and brand. I try to inspire students to pay attention to details as well as their overarching professional goals, and to assemble a portfolio so they’ll be market ready.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
Life-long learning continues after graduation. Make your whole life your art.
Anything else you’d like to share?
