Nothing is ever 'good enough,' so go the extra mile. Katherine Humphreys , Graphic Design Instructor , The Art Institute of Pittsburgh — Online Division
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?
I’m honest with students about what needs more work...typically it’s in the details. I don’t just give my opinion, I provide examples to help students see the big picture.
What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?
One of my favorite assignments is in Experimental Typography. Students create their own typeface using non-traditional materials. I’ve seen it done with everything from socks to spaghetti! Not only does it add levity to a pretty tough class, it teaches students to look at type as not just something that’s read—it’s art.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
Pay attention to detail. Nothing is ever “good enough,” so go the extra mile.
