Was there a defining moment when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?
I always assumed that everyone could visualize a space. The day I realized that wasn’t the case was the day I discovered my professional creative outlet.
How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience?
Taking what happens in the field and applying it to a classroom helps students become stronger designers—while helping me become a better teacher.
What class assignment exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring?
I stress the practice of self-reflection to help students learn how to use critique to inspire them to find better creative solutions.
How does collaboration contribute to students’ success?
A multiplier effect kicks in with teamwork that lets students achieve more together than they could by themselves.
What’s the most important thing you impart to students to help them succeed in class and the real world?
It’s best expressed in one of my favorite quotes...
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
