Orange County Student Earns Spot on Team that Prepared James Beard House Thanksgiving Dinner

Kristine Futalan, who is working toward an Associate of Science in Culinary Arts from The Art Institute of California—Orange County, a campus of Argosy University, was chosen as one of six culinary students to make 2016’s Thanksgiving dinner at the James Beard House in New York City.


She earned her spot by competing against student peers, creating a sample late fall or Thanksgiving menu, and submitting an original recipe.

Kristine has always had a strong passion for food, which grew when she began studying food science in college. While this provided a solid foundation in the physical, biological, and chemical make-up of food, she wanted to learn more—and enrolled in the culinary arts program at The Art Institute of California—Orange County.

She learned that she’d been selected to participate in the prestigious event when the school’s leadership surprised her with an announcement right before class started. According to Kristine, “I never would have thought I would ever step inside the James Beard House. This experience gave me my first opportunity to work in a kitchen with guidance from some of the best chefs around.”

Kristine’s trip to New York lasted five days. In addition to the James Beard meal, she also participated in an immersion day at the Urbani Truffle Academy and shadowed a chef at a New York City restaurant.
