Saxbys needed specific areas, including a café to train new employees, management offices, a kitchen, breakout spaces and open, collaborative spaces. Barnhurst’s design featured glass walls and open spaces, with the café as the focus at the center of the desgin.
“The competition is stressful. It’s seven hours, but it feels like 20 minutes,” said Barnhurst. “But in the end, it’s worth it. It’s a lot of fun.” This was Barnhurst’s second year competing in the Jacobs Student Design Competition. She was named the winner and received her prize of $3,000 at the awards ceremony on Thursday, November 6, 2014.
