The Art Institute of Portland Visits CTEC in Salem
March 2, 2018
On February 26, 2018, Media Arts instructor Jordan Lukrich and high school representative Samantha Bice visited the CTEC (Career and Technical Education) facility in Salem, Oregon. CTEC is a public-private partnership in Salem, which allows juniors and seniors in good academic standing from all six Salem public high schools to spend half of their week taking technical classes. Participating students explore everything from cosmetology to construction management and digital design. Classes in the digital design program, headed by former Disney Institute animator Graham Toms, include 3D animation, digital film, and game design, among others.
During the visit, Lukrich hosted two 3-hour workshops for the entire digital design program. He began by talking about Ai Portland, speaking as both a graduate of the Art Institutes (BS, Media Arts & Animation, Ai California—San Diego, 2008) and an instructor. The workshop portion centered on character design. Lukrich first demonstrated various illustration techniques to the students, pushing the students to step outside their comfort zones and try new design techniques. Under Lukrich’s mentorship, the students created excellent designs.
Following the illustration portion, the class moved to a computer lab to upload their character designs and edit them in Photoshop. Lukrich showed the students how to use fun editing tools, some of which the students had never used before. During this session, Lukrich spoke to the students about the significance of a portfolio and shared some portfolios created by his students at The Art Institute of Portland. He also provided recommendations to the CTEC students on how they could add value to their portfolios while still in high school.
Following the second workshop, Lukrich and Bice debriefed with four of the teachers who observed the workshop and the demonstrations. The teachers offered to bring “serious seniors” to the Ai Portland campus in April for a tour. After the workshop, numerous students contacted Bice to arrange visits to the Ai Portland campus in the near future.
