On January 26-28, 2018, The Art Institute of Portland will host The Global Game Jam® (GGJ), the world's largest game jam event (game creation), taking place around the world at multiple locations. The game jam is a hackathon for game development. The GGJ started with the universal idea that, in today’s connected world, people could come together to be creative, share experiences, and express themselves in a multitude of ways by developing, playing, and using video games.
Over two days, game developers will explore the process of game development, be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration, or artistic expression. It will all happen within 48 hours. People from various backgrounds are invited to participate and contribute to this global mosh pit of game development and creativity.
Aside from being a creativity hub for game creation, the GGJ facilitates new friendships and exposes opportunities within the community. The jam is both an intellectual and emotional challenge. People are invited to explore new technological tools, try on new roles in development, and test their skills to do something that requires them to design, develop, create, test, and make a new game in 48 hours.
The game jam participants will gather at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 26, at The Art Institute of Portland. After a short advisory video keynote from leading game developers, a development theme will be announced. All GGJ sites worldwide will be then challenged to create games based on the theme, with games to be completed by Sunday afternoon. The GGJ is a collaboration event, not a competition.
