Produces Video and Photography Projects for City of Roseville, California
Elyjah Wilbur is a video technician for the City of Roseville in California. He responds to video production requests and assists public information officers and marketing technicians in the pre-production, production, and post production of video and photography projects. “I am also responsible for the broadcast and recording of city council and commission meetings through our government access channel and on-line streaming service,” he says. Elyjah posts to the city’s Instagram account, organizes the city's internal photo archive, and keeps an inventory of the city's video and photography equipment.
He advises current students to stick with the program, even when things get tough. “You owe it to no one but yourself to see it through, because it’s the most rewarding feeling when you look back on your time in school.” Elyjah adds that he experiences challenges in the workplace when he has to work within the same brand guidelines for a prolonged amount of time. “What I enjoy about freelance and school projects is the ability to jump from one style to another. But when you're working for a particular brand, you have to adhere to certain rules, especially if you work for a government agency. But I never see it as an obstacle, just a challenge for me to find a creative way to keep our external videos fresh and interesting every time I push out a new video.” He’s glad to report that his bosses are very open and willing to try new things in an effort to bring more creativity to the city’s marketing and communications. “I believe in openly expressing my ideas and interest in finding innovation with our department and have always experienced great responses to my interest in trying new things.”
He initially applied for his current job in 2013 but did not get it. After earning more industry experience, he tried again and was hired. “I certainly am not at the end of where I want to be. I continue on my path by gaining experience and continuing to build my portfolio with personal projects and freelance work.”
Elyjah, who in 2011 earned a Bachelor Science in Digital Filmmaking & Video Production from The Art Institute of California—Sacramento, says that his education provided the tools, resources, and connections to help him build a portfolio of work that he continues to develop. He adds that the school’s internship program helped him to connect to professionals in his field.
