Fashion Show at The San Antonio Museum of Art
January 5, 2017
The show was developed as part of the museum’s educational First Sundays for Families program with the theme Wear Your Art: Fashion Across Cultures. The students designed and constructed over 20 garments inspired by the collections at the San Antonio Museum of Art within a month of the show while simultaneously planning the production. One of the most amazing parts of this was that participation in this show was entirely extracurricular and not associated with earning a grade in a class. In order to be involved and show their garments in this show, students were required to have a passing grade in all their classes at the time of the show.
The students were assisted by adjunct and full-time faculty members of the Fashion Design Department. Models were donated by Lari Nelson of the Nelson Modeling Agency in San Antonio and a good working relationship was established between her and our faculty members for future events. This event also established a great relationship between The Art Institute of San Antonio and The San Antonio Museum of Art. This will open up many opportunities in the future of working together to create a strong tie to the art community in San Antonio.
This Winter quarter we are running the course FRM222 Event and Fashion Show Production. This class is being taught by our full-time Fashion Retail Management instructor Karen Henry. The term long project for the students is to plan and run a fashion show which will occur near the end of the Winter 2017 quarter. Since the students are planning this event, look for marketing and dates by the end of January. We are proud of the great things our fashion department is doing!
